Ron Murrel 2001 - 2002
It was a trip down memory lane as four former hotel owners stepped back into the kitchens,
bar and restaurant for a special charity lunch.
Whilst staff from the Riverside Hotel in Mildenhall celebrated winning a national award,
members of the town's Rotary Club stepped in to run the place.
For some, the hotel work was entirely new, but for Alison and Keith Lardner and Carolyn and
John Child, who ran the hotel for 11 years, it was back to business as usual.
"It was all going great until the customers turned up, then all hell broke loose," joked
Mr. Child. "We served lunch to more than 80 people."
The Rotarians were busy all day as they changed beds, cooked food, served drinks at the bar
and waited on tables. "We were so busy that we didn't have time to get emotional about the
time when we used to run the hotel," said Mrs. Child. "The Riverside hasn't changed much
but it was quite strange being back." |

Mr. Lardner said the day went very smoothly. "It was great fun and we raised a lot of money
for charity," he said. "We were quite nervous before we went in and I slightly overcooked
the meat, but there were no complaints and everyone had a lovely time."
While the Rotarians were busy raising more than one thousand pounds for Marie Curie nurses,
the hotel staff were treated to a day out by Managing Director Brian Keane. "We were named
Les Routiers East Anglian Hotel of the Year 2001, so we wanted to celebrate," he said. "We
went go-karting, which everyone enjoyed, then went to the Bell Hotel for a few drinks before
coming back to the Riverside in the evening."
